WELCOME TO CHRIST CHURCH

Who We Are

We are a family-sized church in central Grahamstown. We value traditional Anglican worship that feeds our souls as we gather week by week to share in the ministry of Word and Sacrament. We appreciate a good sermon. We enjoy each other's company, and we like meeting new people of all ages and backgrounds.

Ministry Team

Vic Graham

 Rector

Vic Graham grew up in Durban and after graduating from high school pursued studies in theology and psychology in the United States. He was ordained in the Baptist Union of South Africa in 1980, and served in two pastorates and lectured for 15 years at Rosebank Bible College and the Baptist Theological College of South Africa. He began his journey back into the Anglican Church after worshiping for a year at Christ Church Episcopal, in Denver Colorado. He was subsequently ordained an Anglican priest in the Diocese of Grahamstown and taught at the College of the Transfiguration for seven years. Vic has done extensive work in spiritual direction and pastoral therapy for over twenty years. He currently divides his time between Christ Church and private practice.

Simon Tibbs

Assistant Priest

Simon grew up in the UK. After extensive studies in English Literature, and spells teaching English in Istanbul and Turkey, he trained for the priesthood in Cambridge, and was ordained in 2008. After some years in parish ministry in the UK, he came to Grahamstown permanently in 2016 to work as a lecturer at the Anglican Seminary, the College of the Transfiguration. Since 2017, he has been assisting Vic in a range of capacities, including taking services, leading study groups, and helping out with the music. His expertise in Anglican liturgy has enabled him to assist Vic in developing the worship at Christ Church. In his spare time, he enjoys conducting a local chamber choir, Byrdsongs.

Worship

REGULAR SERVICES

Week by week, we hold services on Sundays and Wednesdays at 9am.

The Sunday Eucharist is a traditional service with hymns. The atmosphere is peaceful and prayerful, enhanced by the beauty of our building. Members of the congregation assist as welcomers, and by reading lessons, leading prayers, and assisting the priest with the distrubution of Holy Communion. The service lasts an hour or a little more.
Tea is served in the hall across the road after the service.

The Wednesday Eucharist is a quiet, said service, usually with a short homily or a reflection.
The service lasts between 30 and 40 minutes.

Both these services are conducting using the Anglican Prayer Book of 1989.

SPECIAL SERVICES

Special services are held at different times through the year to mark particular days in the church calendar. In 2018, we revived an earlier tradition of holding a children's Christmas service - in late November, before many of our families depart for the holiday season! Our Holy Week services are particularly beautiful, and are enhanced where possible by creative elements that offer a deeper appeal to the imagination and the senses

baptisms, weddings and funerals

Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals are conducted in church, and all are accompanied by careful pastoral preparation and follow-up.
These ministries are not limited to the congregation. Just click HERE if you would like to know more.

Belonging

Jesus teaches us that there is no separating love of God from love of neighbour, so we are happy to be part of a church where people know each other and care about each other. Follow us on Facebook to find out what's coming up.

SUNDAY SCHOOL

Sunday School meets in the Hall during the Sunday 9am service. An able and expanding team of adult leaders offers a programme based on the weekly Bible readings that combines games and songs with opportunities for learning and spiritual growth in an atmosphere that is supportive, safe, structured and informal.

BIBLE STUDY

Bible Study meets at 6.30pm on a Wednesday evening, and takes place at the home of one or other of the members. It is usually led by one of the clergy. Sessions are wide-ranging, and focus on discussion and the sharing of faith and experience, rather than formal learning. Click HERE if you are interested in giving Bible Study a try.

OUR COMMUNITY

A great Anglican social teacher, Archbishop William Temple, said that the Christian church is the only society that exists for the benefit of those who are not its members. At Christ Church, we take seriously the commitment all Christians need to have to contribute to the communities in which they find themselves.

OUTREACH

Christ Church has a long tradition of contributing to organisations devoted to the welfare of vulnerable people in our community. Currently, we are supporting Sibanye Special Daycare Centre, a facility that offers care and support to children with severe mental and physical disabilities.

COUNTRY FAIR

The Country Fair, usually held in October, is one of the most important events in our calendar. It's a day on which young and old come together as we welcome in large numbers of people who are not part of the regular Christ Church family. The 2018 fair featured children's activities and musical offerings from a local steel band and choir, as well as delicious food, and an impressive array of stalls. Click HERE if you would like to contribute in any way to making the 2019 Country Fair the best ever.

COTT STUDENTS

Christ Church has had a long connection with our near neighbours at the Anglican seminary, the College of the Transfiguration (COTT). While on placement, students typically preach, serve as lay ministers, and participate in church activities beyond Sunday worship. It's a hugely important relationship to us, as the students add something very special to our life together. Our current placement students, pictured left, Patrick Msengana, Kayla, and Edilson Esteira.
